How to be Thin: Who are the Experts on Losing Weight?

by Dr. Rodriguez on May 12, 2009

You know those people who have always been thin and have never gone on a diet?  They are out there but nobody seems to notice them other than when someone says they hate people who can eat what they want but don’t get fat.  Believe it or not, they know how to be thin.  We notice overweight people more.  And who do we usually talk to about dieting and food?  It’s those people who diet and have problems with their weight.  These people are constantly sharing dieting information, as well as what they consider to be their successes and failures; as if the person they are talking to is the expert on losing weight.

The Thin Experts

Little do they know that it’s those people who have always been thin and never diet that are the experts on how to be thin. Why is that, you may ask? Well, if you just look at the facts, it becomes clear. Dieters go on diet after diet, lose weight, only to regain it and go on another diet. Whatever the thin person is doing is keeping them thin. So instead of talking to the constant-dieter, we should be talking to long-term thin people and picking their brain about what they do to be thin.   Actually, you’ll probably have to observe rather than talk to the thin person because they won’t be able to tell you what keeps them thin.  They are too busy with other things in life to pay attention to their weight and what they eat.

Why Thin People are the Experts

I’ve done just that for over 30 years since I started studying and researching the area of weight management, fitness, obesity and eating disorders. If you take this information and compare it to what science has discovered about how the body gains and loses fat, it all becomes clear as day.

Characteristics of Thin People

Here are some common characteristics of thin people with respect to weight and eating. Thin people:

  • tend to be more active than chronic dieters
  • don’t focus on their weight.
  • eat whatever they want whenever they want it.
  • tend to eat a generally healthier diet.
  • eat when they are hungry regardless of what time it is.
  • tend to eat smaller, more frequent meals

It’s time we started studying thin people more if we really want to know how to be thin, instead of just envying them — they may be the experts on losing weight.
